Systems Development Leader

University of Cumbria - Information Services

A new opportunity has arisen to take on the leadership of a small team developing and supporting the University’s information systems student systems, finance, HR, payroll, timetabling, CRM, Web CMS, portals, etc. .

You will be an experienced developer in SQL Server and C#, or have equivalent experience in alternative database and programming tools and a willingness to re-train in Microsoft technologies. Other relevant experience would include SharePoint, BI, Web services and XML. The university has a blend of on-premise and externally-hosted systems so your team will be using a range of integration methods and APIs to deliver solutions.

You will have some experience in leading a development team with the ability to establish and promote technical standards for design, coding, testing and documentation. The role requires a confident communicator with technical colleagues, system suppliers and system administrators in other departments. You will also be familiar with basic project management methods e.g. estimating, project plans, issue & risk management.

You will have experience of supporting information systems in a corporate environment, within published SLA targets. You will be familiar with ITIL principles e.g. incident, problem and change management. Experience in Higher Education is an advantage but not essential. More important will be strong customer-facing skills, and a flair for technical leadership.

This is an exciting time to join the University, with a number of new systems and developments in the pipeline all using the latest technology. If you are interested in being part of our future, please apply or ring for an informal discussion as below.

Information Services covers the complete range of information-related functions: from IT infrastructure, through computers, tablets, phones and audio-visual equipment to information systems and desktop software, formal & informal study spaces, print and electronic learning resources – and advice on how to use them – academic and digital skills and supporting the research of students and staff.

We provide strategic leadership for IT and Learning Resources and work collaboratively with academic departments, professional services and students to advise on opportunities and good practice and to ensure we provide the best possible support for their needs.  For all our services we innovate and develop as well as provide support in person, virtually and through online and physical resources.

Due to the large number of possible IT and information systems requests, we follow very closely the university project management approach to allow assessment of value, agreement of costs and commitment of resources to meet university needs. We publish our plans and schedule for all staff to see.

The multi-award winning University of Cumbria is a wonderful blend of old and new, founded on a rich educational history with institutions dating back more than 150 years.

On the cusp of our 10th anniversary, we have a fast growing research reputation, increasing profile and place alongside national and international employers as well as multi-million-pound campus investments and exciting ambitions for the future.
