Geotechnical Research Technician

University of Dundee - Civil Engineering

Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties

8 months.

We seek an experienced geotechnical research technician to join an EPSRC project “Rooting for Sustainable Performance”. This post is part of a strong consortium between the Universities of Dundee, Southampton, Aberdeen, and The James Hutton Institute, supported by an industrial stakeholder group.

The project is exploring how the roots of vegetation (trees/shrubs and grasses) reinforce and stabilise soil slopes, helping to prevent shallow landslides. An ultimate goal is to be able to design an optimal plant/root system for use in stabilising existing and new engineered earthworks. This requires data on mechanical, hydrological and biological processes that affect the behaviour of soils at the root-soil interface.

The post holder will perform and analyse series of experiments to determine the effects of plant root systems on stabilising soil slopes. This will involve characterising the material properties of roots, soils, and rooted soils using a variety of tests in the laboratory and also conducting tests on rooted slopes in the University of Dundee Geotechnical Centrifuge. Analysis of data and synthesising results for publication a necessary part of the role.

The post provides an excellent opportunity to obtain research experience within leading geotechnical and environmental research groups with a strong track record in this area of research.
