Faculty: Faculty of Engineering

Location: The Diamond

Salary: Grade 7, £30,175 to £38,183 per annum with potential to progress to £41,709 through sustained exceptional contribution

Summary:

Step inside the state of the art, 20,000m2, £86 million Diamond building and you’ll be inspired by what we can offer Engineering students. It is our largest ever investment in teaching and learning, with 17 specialist laboratories designed to create a fantastic place for interdisciplinary engineering education. Within the Faculty of Engineering, one of the biggest and best engineering faculties in the UK sits Multidisciplinary Engineering Education (MEE), an innovative teaching group which provides students with the opportunity to realise their full potential as engineering leaders with employable skills.

MEE is comprised of around 50 academic, technical and administrative staff. The practical teaching covers a range of disciplines designed around 3 main themes:

  • Thermodynamics/Mechanics/Structures/Fluids/Manufacturing Technology
  • Materials/Bioengineering/Chemical Engineering
  • Electrical/Electronic/Control/Computing/Robotics

We’re seeking a highly capable and enthusiastic Technical Team Leader to join the Materials, Biological and Chemical Engineering (MBCE) Theme and be responsible for overseeing the day to day management of all technical services, operations and facilities across the range of laboratories within MBCE.

Reporting directly to the Departmental Technical Manager, you’ll be responsible for all aspects of technical operations as well as delivering technical training and practical teaching to first and second year undergraduates in your specialist subject area and will have a visionary approach to developing and implementing new and innovative teaching.

You will have a good honours degree or equivalent experience in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or Biotechnology and a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety regulations. Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with staff at all levels is also vital.

You’ll bring a wealth of people management skills to the role as you’ll be responsible for the line management of a small but talented team of engineering technicians, ensuring that this resource is deployed effectively throughout the theme. A proven track record in building and developing a team is therefore essential in order to ensure the direction of the theme is aligned to departmental and faculty objectives. Above all, you’ll be dedicated to providing a high quality practical experience to students and will proactively seek to improve existing laboratory practice, ensuring that the Diamond remains at the very forefront of innovative engineering education.

This is a really exciting post which offers a unique chance to help Engineering at Sheffield to be the best student experience in the country.
