About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to contribute to the evolution of the JASMIN ( cloud computing environment. You will be working with world experts developing innovative technical solutions to address the challenge of building an infrastructure to support the needs of researchers in their work processing and analysing complex, high volume scientific data.

JASMIN is a multi-petabyte computing facility configured for data-intensive environmental science, providing a globally unique computational environment which supports a private cloud, high performance storage and traditional batch compute cluster. It enables a vibrant and dynamic UK research community to do new and exciting science at scale.

This new opportunity has arisen for a full-time Software Developer / DevOps post to contribute to the development of software and services for JASMIN’s cloud as part of a major redevelopment of the overall JASMIN infrastructure.

You will be working with the development team on the following tasks:

  • Migration of the cloud system to OpenStack
  • The development of a new cluster compute-as-a-service for JASMIN's cloud
  • Integration of a new object storage system together with services for data discovery and access
  • Second-line support to cloud users, providing technical help for use of the cloud, liaising with system teams and documenting solutions.

About you

You will have a first degree in an appropriate subject (e.g. computer science or engineering or another numerate subject) or equivalent.

You will be experienced in the development and integration of software for Linux platform.

It is desirable that you have experience of Linux system administration and of Python programming as well as knowledge of web applications and scientific computing environments.

Experience with OpenStack, VMware or other similar virtualisation technologies and with container technologies e.g. Docker or Kubernetes is beneficial.
