Research Associate* in the Thermofluids Division

Salary in the range: £36,070- £43,350 per annum(Maximum salary on appointment will be £37,970 per annum)

The Thermofluids Division wishes to appoint a Research Associate to conduct research into smouldering combustion at Imperial College London. 

Imperial College Hazelab is a multidisciplinary research group based in the Thermofluids Division of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and is led by Dr Guillermo Rein. It is one of the largest fire science groups in Europe and carries out world-leading research in both fundamental and applied aspects of fire science.

The Research Associate will be involved in an ERC funded project, HAZE, which focuses on tackling the global problem of smouldering peat megafires. The project will involve the study of smouldering peat, analysing its mechanisms of spread. The outcome of the study will boost our understanding of how smouldering fires ignite, spread and extinguish. The project will require extensive knowledge of combustion and heat transfer.

Applicants will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Fire Safety Engineering, and a first degree (or equivalent) in an Engineering discipline.  A strong knowledge of combustion and heat transfer is essential. Experimental or computational experience within the fields of combustion and heat transfer is essential. Experience with fire work is desirable.
