Trainee Buyer

Lancaster University

Closing Date:   Thursday 31 August 2017
Interview Date:   Monday 11 September 2017

Lancaster is ranked top ten in the Guardian League table and is consistently highly placed in all major league tables. Our vision for the future is to be a sustainable and academically excellent institution recognised as one of the leading universities in the world.

We are committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best staff.  Our People Strategy 2020 clearly articulates that the core strength of our university is our people. Attracting the best staff to work for Lancaster University, and within our international partnerships, will assist us in delivering our strategic priorities in research, teaching and engagement.

This vacancy is a rare trainee position in a dynamic team and a unique sector. Procurement at Lancaster has undergone significant transformation in recent years. The team continues to expand its reach and is forward thinking in its approach to managing the full range of Purchase to Pay and Source to Contract activity for the University’s non-pay expenditure of over £70m per annum and a large capital programme. The Higher Education (HE) sector purchases a wide range of goods and services and the team at Lancaster support world-leading academics in their teaching and research along with colleagues from other Professional Services areas such as Facilities and Information Systems. Categories managed include: Laboratory Supplies & Equipment, Travel, IT, Facilities and Professional Services.

Although previous experience of delivering a Procurement service is an advantage, the key requirements of the role are: an analytical mind, good with numbers and spreadsheets; a customer service focus; great communication skills; used to working in a busy environment and prioritising tasks. Most of all you will have a willingness to learn.

You will also be supported to work towards Membership of the Chartered institute of Procurement and Supply. Once gained, MCIPS qualification may assist the role holder to progress into a higher role within the Procurement team, subject to the availability of a suitable role.

Prior experience of working in the HE Sector is not essential and we would welcome applications from candidates with experience gained in the wider public sector and in the private sector.

Should you have further questions at this stage, please contact Linda Wardle, Procurement Manager on 01524 594768 or by email

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
