Post-doctoral Research Associate

University of York - Department of Biology

This exciting post-doctoral research associate position funded by Wellcome and the Royal Society is available in the laboratory of Dr. Chris MacDonald. The project will examine different molecular machineries and elucidate how they contribute to intracellular trafficking of membrane proteins. These projects will use a range of molecular and cellular biology approaches, including yeast and mammalian cell culture, microscopy, flow cytometry, in addition to various genetic and biochemical techniques.

Our immediate aim is to understand the role of several key proteins, which were identified from a global genetic screen in yeast, that are required for efficient recycling of membrane proteins from endosomes back to the cell surface. Longer term goals involve testing yeast derived models in cultured mammalian cells and developing new projects from the cohort of novel genes identified in the genetic screen.

Your main duties will be to conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research, as well as to assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects.

You will have a PhD in a biology-based discipline and have previous broad-based experience in cell and molecular biology techniques. You will be able to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination and to plan and prioritise own work in order to meet deadlines, including using your initiative to plan research programmes. The ability to adapt to continuously changing demands of a growing and dynamic research group is essential.

The post is available immediately initially for a period of 3 years, but with potential to be funded for up to 5 years (full-time, 37 hours per week), if appointed at the bottom of the salary scale.  Appointment higher in the Grade 6 scale would reduce the period of the contract.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr. Chris MacDonald, Department of Biology, University of York, York YO10 5DD (telephone +44 (0)1904 328609, or

The post is available full-time, on a fixed-term contract.
