The NIHR has announced its first ever investment in Global Surgery research, awarding £7m funding for the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery to be led by the University of Birmingham. This initial investment is for four years and will build capacity through a collaboration of three Universities (Birmingham, Edinburgh and Warwick) by establishing five overseas hubs (West Africa, South Africa, Central and East Africa, Central America and South Asia). The hubs will extend further into at least 40 hospitals in low and middle-income countries (LMIC) who will collectively carry out research to evaluate and improve surgical practice.

This role will act as a focal point and facilitator for the development of the Unit and will be responsible for its day to day overall coordination, financial, project management, administration and support of its aims. They will assist the Directors of the Unit in developing and maintaining the strategic vision and establishing the long terms sustainability of the research of the Unit. This will include oversight of the three key committees; Executive Committee, Training and Education Committee, and Policy and Impact Committee.

The post holder will be an integral member of the College of MDS Research and Knowledge Transfer Office, drawing on and enhancing the Office’s professional knowledge transfer management support function. Although based in the College of MDS, the post holder will need to work with key staff within across all the Universities and Hubs involved in the Unit. The post will report to the Strategic Projects Manager within the Research & Knowledge Transfer Office of the College of Medical and Dental Sciences.
