Salary: £32,958 to £38,183 per annum (pro-rata if part time) together with USS Pension benefits, if required.

Main Purpose of the post:

To deliver its top 20 ambition Swansea University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer with excellence in teaching and research in the Department of History, within the College of Arts and Humanities.

This post requires a contribution to teaching in Twentieth-Century European History (including Britain), and also across the Department where required, in addition to sharing organisational and academic administrative responsibilities.

The successful candidate will support and extend the continued development of teaching, postgraduate supervision and research in history at Swansea. The Department of History at Swansea University is an ambitious and vibrant unit with 24 staff and over 900 undergraduate and postgraduate students. It is an outward-looking unit, distinctive for its breadth of scholarly activity from the middle ages to the contemporary world, and for its firm commitment to engaging with the heritage and public history agendas in Wales, the UK, Europe and beyond.

The department has particular strengths in five research clusters:

  • Conflict, reconstruction and memory
  • Medical and disability history
  • Medieval history
  • Welsh history

However, it is committed to research across all its areas and disciplines and it fosters a dynamic research environment that is collaborative, interlinked and supportive.

Essential Criteria

  • A Higher degree in Modern History or equivalent
  • Knowledge of twentieth-century European history.
  • The ability to design, deliver and adapt own teaching using appropriate style/method to meet the identified learning objectives across the subject area, and to contribute to teaching in the College.
  • Evidence of the ability to inspire students and to enhance the learning experience.
  • To demonstrate awareness of current research in the field and / or current practice within the relevant field.
  • Evidence of two 2* outputs or equivalent in the last 5 years to demonstrate disseminating research findings through appropriate written, oral or other media both internally and externally to the University or the potential to reach this baseline criterion.
  • Evidence of presentation at conferences, seminars or workshops with external reach/impact.
  • Evidence of implementing innovative practice including evaluation and positive outcome based on current research and knowledge in the field.
  • Evidence of advancing professional or teaching practice.

 Desirable Criteria

  • Expertise in the history of war, post-conflict environments, and/or visual culture.
  • A recognised teaching qualification and to be working towards Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (or willingness to apply for this.)
