Deputy Chief Executive (Membership) Summary

The University of East London Students’ Union is a small students’ union that punches above its weight. We excel in stimulating high levels of student engagement, running innovative programs of student development and highly effective student representation. UELSU has recently overseen a strategic review process that has now given a clear direction for UELSU to travel in the pursuit of; “Inspiring and empowering students to overcome barriers and achieve their aspirations”. Now, we have a three year strategic plan as well as a new staffing structure to enable the Union to meet the goals set out in the strategy.

Job Description Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to employ a Deputy Chief Executive (Membership). The role has oversight and leadership of student voice, representation and engagement. In line with our strategy, the focal point of this role will be to direct, develop and coordinate the Union’s Membership functions with the intention of increasing participation of our members in our activities and identifying new models and activities for members to engage in.

In addition to this the post holder would need to grow the department. One of the areas we have identified for growth is the potential to obtain additional funding from a wide range of sources, inside the University and through the potential to establish and utilise corporate connections to create additional staffing targeted to deliver objectives related to our strategic plan.

The post will report directly to the CEO and support them on strategic matters. You will also report to the Union’s Board of Trustees and deputise for the CEO in their absence.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Experience

We’re looking for an experienced senior manager to lead our Membership services department with a strategic role on developing community engagement, academic enhancement, governance, and social enterprise and membership activities.

The successful candidate will have an excellent track record of engaging with student leaders and have experience of building and maintaining personal and organisational relationships across a wide range of internal and external partners. An acquired network of relevant stakeholder contacts within the student movement or Higher Education area would be ideal, however a willingness to network broadly and establish a wide range of cross-sector connections is key to the realising our vision of having long term impacts on our members.
