Research Associate - Optical Metrology for FAMH

Loughborough University - Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering

Fixed term for 36 months or to 28 February 2024, (whichever is soonest) in the first instance, but may be extended subject to the availability of funding.

A postdoctoral position, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council as part of the Future Advanced Metrology Hub, to develop a novel laser-based system for the measurement of shape, roughness and vibration of large scale structures for the aerospace and automotive industries. The new system will make measurements directly from the component's surface, and will provide dramatic improvements in coordinate data acquisition rate compared to the current state of the art. As a result, high-value-manufacturing processes such as robotic assembly and machining will be achievable to a much higher degree of precision than is currently possible.

The successful applicant will be based in the recently refurbished laboratories of the Optical Engineering research group at Loughborough, which has a long history of innovative development in applied optics technologies. The Future Advanced Metrology Hub, led by the University of Huddersfield, will receive GBP 10M from EPSRC and over GBP 15M from the consortium's industrial partners. Two Research Associates and five PhD students are being appointed to implement the Loughborough University work packages.

A physical sciences first degree is required, together with a PhD or equivalent experience in optical instrumentation development. Previous experience in a closely-related area such as speckle interferometry would be an advantage. Starting salary will be dependent on experience.

Application Closing Date: 29 August 2017.

Loughborough University is committed to achieving equality and valuing diversity in all aspects of employment and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
