Research Associate

Imperial College London - Dyson School of Design Engineering

Salary: £36,800 - £44,220 per annum* (maximum salary on appointment will be £38,730 per annum)

Campus: South Kensington

Fixed term for 12 months in the first instance

The Dyson School of Design Engineering is the newest department at Imperial College London and builds on the long-standing design and engineering expertise at Imperial. This includes the world-renowned Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) programme run jointly by Imperial and the Royal College of Art. The school is growing rapidly and benefits from world-class staff, students, and collaborators.

The Dyson School of Design Engineering is seeking a post-doctoral research associate (RA) to work on the project ‘Methods and Applications in Designing Consumption Rituals’. This is a full-time position for 12 months with the potential to extend another year.

The appointed postdoc will work on an industry-sponsored project to explore the facilitation of consumption rituals through design. The first part of this project focuses on understanding common consumption rituals in specific user contexts. This will involve examining the psychosocial mechanisms that underlie rituals and the role that design—understood broadly—plays in facilitating these rituals. The second half of this work focuses on developing design interventions to create or enhance rituals in which consumers engage. This work is positioned well to conduct research that generates novel behavioural insights and practical design outcomes expected to be implemented in the near term.

The appointed Research Associate will work at the intersection of design, marketing, psychology, and engineering. The RA will work with research staff in the department and in the industrial partner organisation for the development of this work.

This post requires a background in consumer/user behaviour. The appointed Research Associate will be expected to design and conduct qualitative and quantitative research studies investigating consumption rituals. The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in applied psychology, marketing, design, or a related field and have expertise in conducting experimental research. In some exceptional cases, individuals without a PhD, but with relevant UG and MSc degrees will also be considered if they can also show extensive relevant experience.

*Candidates who have not yet officially been awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant with a salary range £32,380-£34,040 per annum.
