About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations and operates the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). The RAL Space Department (RAL Space) is providing state-of-the-art millimetre-wave receivers in support of a second generation of meteorological sounders (MetOP-SG).

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Quality Assurance Engineer to ensure that our deliverables meet the standards of workmanship required for space flight. Working within the RAL Space Millimetre-wave Technology Group, you will take responsibility for project-related activities and take ownership for and maintain the project Product Assurance Plan and subsidiary plans.

Key responsibilities include:

  • ensuring project compliance with the customer Product Assurance (PA) Requirements Document and all other project PA requirements;
  • being the PA point of contact between STFC and PA authorities at Airbus (UK, France, Germany) and ESA;
  • leading the inspection and audit of subcontractors and suppliers;
  • identification and control of Critical Items and maintain a Critical Items list;
  • maintenance of all project non-conformance reports (NCRs) on the ESA NCTS system;
  • convening and chairing Minor NRBs (internal) and Major NRBs (ESA, Airbus participation);
  • managing RAL’s inputs to the Materials & Process Control Board (MPCB) and Process Qualification Status Review (PQSR);
  • ensuring that all necessary process qualification activities are performed;
  • ensuring timely reporting of MPCB & PQSR outputs;
  • managing all STFC Requests for Deviation (RFD) and Requests for Waiver (RFW);
  • inspection of critical processes and parts;
  • establishing and maintaining an eLog electronic traveller database for all module- and receiver-level manufacturing, assembly & test;
  • ensuring that all deliverable hardware follows the agreed test and qualification programme and that full end-to-end traceability is maintained;
  • representing the project as PA lead at all major project reviews;
  • supporting project Configuration Control;
  • monitoring of cleanliness and contamination controls;
  • defining AIV controls;
  • overseeing of EEE parts programme. 

About You

You must have a degree level education or equivalent ideally in the fields of Aerospace, Electronic Engineering or Physics.

A recognised quality assurance certification and knowledge of spaceflight compliancy and experience of micro-electronics, assembly techniques and processes including soldering, wire bonding and die attach is also essential.

You must have a proactive approach towards problem solving and have experience of Root Cause Analysis in a technical environment.

You must be able to communicate with project team members, partners and external stakeholders and be able to demonstrate and deliver relevant project documentation.
