Research Assistant

University College London - Marie Curie Palliative Care Research department, Division of Psychiatry

We are seeking a research assistant to provide research support to Dr Kirsten Moore as part of a three-year Senior Fellowship funded by the Alzheimer’s Society. The post is a two-year position subject to successfully completing a 9-month probation period. The position will require travel to participants’ homes across England to undertake interviews and may require some overnight stays to South or North England. The position will involve working on a study examining grief before death amongst carers of people with dementia. This study aims to examine the relationship between carers’ feelings of grief before the death of a person with dementia and how well carers are prepared for that death. The study involves completing a questionnaire schedule with 150 carers of people with dementia (across all stages of dementia and for people with dementia living at home or in a care home). Twenty of these carers will be purposively selected to complete additional semi-structured questions to further explore the research topics. The study also involves a survey of care homes and Admiral Nurses. Findings from the carer and service provider data will be used to develop a resource for supporting carers to help prepare for end of life care and to manage grief. The post is funded for two years in the first instance.

Applicants for this study must have a first degree and/or Master’s in psychology, nursing, social sciences, mental health, dementia care, care of the elderly or palliative care. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including communicating with participants about sensitive topics including death and dying are needed. Experience with clinical research is preferred.
