The Agriculture and Food Development Authority - Teagasc

Location: Teagasc, Mellows Campus, Athenry. Co. Galway.

Grade/Salary: Research Officer, with a starting salary of €32,729 per annum. The current salary scale is €32,729 to €63,700.

Starting pay will be at the minimum of the scale per Government Circular E100/8/82. Exceptional circumstances may apply for candidates with current or previous service in the public sector (including Teagasc).

Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Policy.

Post Type: Permanent Appointment

A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Basic Function:          

The successful candidate will be required to develop, lead and implement a research programme with emphasis on some or all of the following:

  • Grass/forage intake and performance of ewes and lambs
  • Nutrient absorption and digestion
  • Meat quality
  • Hill sheep production

The research programme will be linked to the wider Teagasc sheep research which is aimed at increasing the performance of ewes and lambs on grazed grass and the wider Teagasc livestock programmes.  The research will involve the study of the non-genetic and genetic factors affecting the intake and performance of sheep fed on a range of grasses, clovers and other forages.  The hill sheep studies will involve using the existing network of BETTER Hill Sheep farms combined with the evaluation of different options for finishing of hill lambs.

Person Specification

Note: The ‘Essential’ qualifications, skills and knowledge outlined below are ‘must-have’ which will be used in the shortlisting process.

Essential Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a QQI Honours Level 8 degree in Agricultural Science, Veterinary Science or a related discipline.
  • PhD in a relevant discipline.

Note: While a PhD is an essential requirement for this post, equivalent research experience may be deemed acceptable solely at the discretion of the Director of Teagasc.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Post-doctoral experience in Animal nutrition/genetics would be a distinct advantage
