This position will support successful ERDF projects: Cornwall New Energy project aims to provide business support to SMEs and community groups in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to enable them to plan towards installing renewable energy systems; adopt low carbon and environmental goods and services; develop innovations in the low carbon and environmental goods and services; access new market opportunities; and improve their economic/environmental performance amongst other outcomes. The Intelligent Community Energy project aims to design and implement innovative smart energy solutions for isolated territories in the UK-France Channel area.

The post-holder will contribute to the development of a bi-directional power electronic converter for battery storage. The research will include mathematical modelling, numerical simulation, electrical wiring and testing and developing a CAN-bus communication protocol between the power electronic converter and the battery management system.

An energy management system for microgrids, based on artificial intelligence, will also be developed. It will use available current power data from installed renewable energy sources and weather forecast to predict the short term electric energy price and hence optimise the operation of the battery storage.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline. At Postdoctoral Research Fellow level, the successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in Power Electronics and Control. The successful candidate will be appointed at Grade E or F depending on the skills and experience of the individual. Candidates should demonstrate their achievement against the relevant criteria in the accompanying person specifications which will be used to make an appointment at an appropriate level.

The campus is a few minutes’ walk from Penryn and only 10 minutes from Falmouth, which is the centre of Cornwall’s creative scene, with businesses, studios, shops and galleries, and great live music across the town. Falmouth’s seven beaches, beautiful rivers and the world-famous marina also make it a haven for those who love sand, sailing and surf. The University will also assist with relocation costs and support where required.
