Research Technician – Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Location: Teagasc, Crops, Environment and Land-Use Programme, Johnstown Castle, Wexford.

Grade/Salary: Technician Grade 1. The current salary scale for this post is €28,220 to €38,373. 

Starting pay will be at the minimum of the scale as per Government Circular E100/8/82. Exceptional circumstances may apply for candidates with current or previous service in the public sector (including Teagasc).

Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Policy.

Post Type: Permanent

A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled.

Background: Changes in agricultural practices associated with the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, World Trade Organisation negotiations, Kyoto and Gothenburg protocols and legislation such as the Nitrates Directive, have highlighted the importance of reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions.  There is a large active ongoing research programme refining agricultural greenhouse gas emission factors and investigating tools for reducing these emissions.  Currently the greenhouse gas laboratory is very busy, analysing c. 50,000 gas samples per year for a range of Teagasc and collaborator research projects.

Person Specification

Note: The ‘Essential’ qualifications, skills and knowledge outlined below are ‘must-have’ which will be used in the shortlisting process.

Essential Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a QQI Level 6 in chemistry, agricultural science, soil science, environmental science or a related discipline.
  • Data handling and computer skills.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Postgraduate training and experience in the quantification of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Use of stable isotope mass spectrometry.
