The Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult was established in 2012 as an independent centre of excellence to advance the growth of the UK cell and gene therapy industry, by bridging the gap between scientific research and full-scale commercialisation. With more than 120 employees focusing on cell and gene therapy technologies, it works with partners in academia and industry to ensure these life-changing therapies can be developed for use in health services throughout the world.

Purpose of Role:

As part of our ongoing commitment to promoting growth of the cell and gene therapy field we are looking for an analytical scientist to apply in-depth technical expertise across a range of projects to support the development cell and gene therapy products.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Working with lead and senior scientists to design, execute and document analytical development activities across a range of projects
  • Responsible for executing agreed research independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to independently analyse raw data to a high standard and present results to project teams and external clients/collaborators as appropriate
  • Ability to prepare accurate and technically cohesive analytical reports
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and manage raw data in line with company policies
  • Ability to produce detailed protocols and SOP’s to allow assay transfer both internally and externally


The candidate must have:

  • Demonstrable experience in assay development, optimisation and validation
  • Extensive experience in at least two of the following:
    • RT-qPCR assay development including primer design, DNA/RNA isolation/purification and PCR quantification using data analysis packages
    • Multicolour flow cytometry including panel selection, assay optimisation and data analysis
    • Screening approaches for measuring secreted growth factors and cytokines using techniques such as protein arrays, MSD or Luminex

Experience in the following is also desirable:

  • Mammalian cell culture including cell banking
  • Fluorescent imaging including epifluorescent and confocal microscopy
  • Next generation sequencing
  • Genotyping using techniques such as G-Banding, FISH, CGH or SNP arrays.

Knowledge / Skills / Competencies

  • Ability to work within a professional laboratory environment, maintaining a high standard of work
  • Good experimental planning, including the ability to schedule forthcoming work and predict consumable and resource requirements
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including report writing
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under limited supervision
  • Good IT skills including experience of using data analysis software packages
  • Excellent organisational skills with a strong focus on attention to detail
  • Proven ability to engage constructively with colleagues at all levels across different departments to deliver objectives
  • A good team player and positive attitude

Education / Qualifications

  • PhD in an area relevant to cell and gene therapies
  • or MSc with 3+ years industrial experience within an appropriate life science environment
