Cefas is a world leader in marine science and technology, providing innovative solutions for the aquatic environment, biodiversity and food security. The Data Science and Systems team work with multiple teams across Cefas’ Science Directorate, providing statistical and modelling expertise, including the development of assessment tools. We work with a variety of data generated by experimental studies, research vessel surveys, monitoring programmes, model outputs and Earth observations, to deliver insightful analyses for UK government marine policy questions and international customers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

You will provide statistical work and advice to the fisheries and environmental research and monitoring programmes and collaborate with other teams to provide advice on statistical analysis, study design and assessments.

Duties will include:

  • Statistical analysis & modelling of fisheries and environmental data.
  • Review of, and assistance with, experimental study design.
  • Statistical advice to support scientists across the directorate.
  • Contributing to the development and application of data analysis tools.
  • Data compilation and analysis from local, national and international databases.
  • Input into future grant applications.
  • Contributing to peer-reviewed research publications with a goal of developing your own area of research.

Qualifications/Experience/Skills

You should be able to provide a wide range of statistical analyses, support and advice on study design with a strong knowledge of statistical theory and good mathematical abilities. You will have good programming skills in a statistical package, ideally R. You must be willing and able to learn new statistical, mathematical and computational modelling techniques. You must be flexible and committed, with the ability to work as part of a team, but also independently to organise own work to meet deadlines. You should have strong communication and writing skills, excellent attention to detail and well-developed time management with the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time. You should be highly computer literate and have experience in handling and manipulating large datasets.

Some experience in using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and a basic understanding of biological systems and interest in the marine environment would be desirable.

Academic qualifications and experience required for direct entry into this Cefas Pay Band 5 post are a degree or equivalent in mathematics, statistics or a comparable subject, and relevant work experience.
