Research Fellow in Tomographic Reconstruction Algorithms

We are seeking a Research Fellow to work on an exciting project to develop novel algorithms for the reconstruction of 3D images from tomographic x-ray measurements.

X-ray tomography is used in many areas, from medical diagnosis to the non-destructive testing of aerospace components. Modern aerospace components are often safety critical and thus need regular safety testing. However, they often have complex shapes and use a range of materials which means that traditional x-ray systems do not work well. We have been developing more advanced systems to specifically address these issues. One of our developmental systems is now capable of moving objects along complex trajectories, however, due to missing tomographic information in the acquisition, current reconstruction algorithms still lead to results with significant artefacts.

Your role will be the development of bespoke tomographic reconstruction algorithms to deal with this by using additional information about the object. In particular, in non-destructive testing of manufactured components, we often have technical drawings that provide geometric information about an object. The challenge will be to develop efficient methods that can combine x-ray measurement data from real components with geometric information taken from these technical drawings.

You will join a vibrant team of several PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who are working on a range of tomographic reconstruction projects. Team members come from the signal processing and control group and the µ-VIS volumetric imaging centre. The group has access to dedicated high end computing hardware, including high memory servers and desktop computers with dedicated high end graphic processor units. The University also hosts the 12,000 core IRIDIS4 supercomputer cluster offering additional high end computing resources.

In addition to the computing resources of the group, the µ-VIS imaging centre ( hosts seven complementary XCT systems, offering imaging capabilities from nanoCT imaging to the largest highest energy micro-CT system in Europe at present. A large walk in room based system allows us the flexibility to install different platforms and manipulator systems. You will work closely with a dedicated second postdoctoral researcher who has designed our current manipulator and who will conduct experimental work to support your algorithmic developments.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

A PhD or equivalent professional qualification and experience in computer science, engineering, physics, applied mathematics or an equivalent technical discipline is required.

This is a computational role and good programming skills are essential. Experience with matlab, python and CUDA programming is highly desirable.

Other desirable experience includes a background in numerical optimisation, a detailed understanding and knowledge of tomographic image reconstruction and expertise in ray tracing and finite element computation.
