Research Associate in Structural Biology and Biophysics

Full Time, Fixed Term Contract for 3 years

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented postdoc to join Dr Ian Hitchcock’s laboratory in the Department of Biology, University of York.

Our laboratory is interested in the development of Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). We have previously demonstrated that the thrombopoietin receptor, MPL is essential for the development of these diseases via its interaction with the JAK2V617F oncogene (Blood, 2014. 124(26): p. 3956-63). This is the first of three postdoctoral research associate positions as part of a CRUK Programme awarded to Dr Hitchcock, and will focus on characterising the interactions between MPL and JAK2V617F in the regulation of hyperactive signal transduction. This work will be in collaboration with co-Investigator Professor Jennifer Potts from the York Structural Biology Laboratories.

You will conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and contribute to the production of research and assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects. You will develop and initiate collaborative working internally and externally, providing guidance to other staff and students. You will write up research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities.

You will already possess a relevant PhD and 2-3 years postdoctoral experience in structural biology, molecular biophysics, protein-protein interactions or a related subject, ideally with experience in membrane proteins. You will have experience in a range of molecular, biochemical and structural techniques including; protein production and purification, size-exclusion chromatography linked to multi-angle laser light scattering (SEC-MALLS), microscale thermophoresis (MST), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. You will need to be able to work independently as well as part of the programme team working on related projects. Excellent communication skills are essential and you should be keen to develop project/team leadership skills.

This post is full time, for up to 3 years. This is a grade 6 post, with salary in the range of £31,076 – £38,183 per year.
