About The Role

We now have an opportunity for a Senior IT Support and Systems Engineer to support and manage business critical IT infrastructure, based within STFC’s ISIS facility, a leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences.

The ISIS IT Infrastructure Services team provides a number of critical IT services to several STFC departments. These services include complex mission-critical network infrastructures, back-end systems, application servers and large-scale scientific analysis and storage infrastructures, and a full IT support service to all its users via a service desk.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Managing, developing and supporting critical servers and systems such as AD domains, file and application servers, Hyper-V failover clusters and VMs
  • Assisting the network manager to support and develop the ISIS network infrastructure
  • Developing and managing network monitoring systems, such as LibreNMS
  • Developing and supporting the desktop deployment systems, images and scripts
  • Writing and developing scripts to automate tasks, particularly in PowerShell and Batch.

About You

You should be educated to at least ‘A’ level standard or equivalent, or demonstrate equivalent experience.  Industry qualifications such as MCP, MCSE, ITIL, etc. would also be desirable.

You will demonstrate experience of at least one of the following key areas:

  • Managing and supporting mission-critical Windows systems and servers using technologies such as MS Windows Server 2012 R2, MS Active Directory services, MS Hyper-V servers and failover clustering, PowerShell, file and application servers, etc.
  • Managing modern computer IP networks, switches and routers.

You will also have experience of supporting PC-based computer systems and applications to 3rd line level.

You will be enthusiastic and demonstrate the ability to rapidly acquire in-depth expertise in computing systems and to seek and accept change and continuous improvement.

You will demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, teamwork and customer service skills.
