STFC - The Science and Technology Facilities Council

1 Year Fixed Term

About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

We deliver world class research, innovation and skills for the UK. We combine world-class facilities including the Central Laser Facility, the Hartree Centre, ISIS and RAL Space, with major international collaborations with organisations such as CERN and some of the world’s most talented staff. Our Laboratories at Harwell, Oxfordshire and Daresbury, Cheshire are positioned at the heart of a joint venture initiative to stimulate innovation and growth.

About The Role

We are inviting applications for a postdoctoral position in the Computational Mathematics Group at STFC-Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, UK.

You will join the Numerical Linear Algebra for Future and Emerging Technologies (NLAFET) project funded by the European Commission involving Inria, Umea University, University of Manchester and STFC-RAL.  The position will focus on the design, implementation and evaluation of parallel algorithms for numerical linear algebra with regards to extreme-scale challenges.

The research at RAL will principally be on sparse direct solvers that are highly scalable and thus suitable for future and emerging large scale computers.  The algorithms developed will be validated on several applications targeted by NLAFET, such as power systems, computational fluid dynamics and astrophysics.  The research will be done in close collaboration with established researchers in the Computational Mathematics Group as well as with other partners in NLAFET.

Successful applicants will be appointed at either Band D or Band E of STFC’s staffing hierarchy, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.

About You

You should have a PhD (or equivalent research experience) with strong emphasis on numerical or computational mathematics. For the higher band (Band E) significant post-doctoral (or equivalent research experience) with strong emphasis on numerical or computational mathematics and experience in high performance computing would be required.

You will have evidence of high quality research in numerical linear algebra and significant experience in parallel C/C++ or Fortran.

Experience in programming GPUs is desirable but not essential.

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered.

Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages (

Reasonable relocation costs will be met if required.
