Professor of Mathematics and Head of Department (80802-087)

University of Warwick - Department of Mathematics

Warwick Mathematics Institute seeks a new Head to continue to develop and advance the quality of its education and research. The successful candidate will be appointed as a Professor of Mathematics on an indefinite basis and will have a strong research and leadership profile. The appointment as Head will be for three years in the first instance, with an option to extend.

The Mathematics Institute is one of the largest and most successful departments in the University of Warwick. Its research spans a broad cross-section of pure and applied mathematics and its diverse teaching programmes attract exceptional students at all levels. It comprises around 1000 undergraduate students, 150 postgraduate students (taught and research), 40 postdoctoral researchers, 75 permanent academic staff (including several joint appointments with the School of Life Sciences, Warwick Manufacturing Group, Engineering, Statistics and Computer Science), and 18 support staff.

It has close relations to the co-located Department of Statistics and other departments within the Faculty of Science, as well as staff working at the Alan Turing Institute. In 2018, a £27M extension to the building will be opened to promote further interdisciplinary collaboration between Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. The department holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award, and recent surveys of satisfaction among students and staff reveal a happy and productive department that prospers in an excellent working environment.

The department was ranked third in Mathematical Sciences at REF 2014 (in a combined submission with the Statistics Department), and has been consistently highly rated in research assessments, and by other measures of research success such as research income, scientific prizes and honours. With the support of the in-house Mathematics Research Centre (MRC), it runs a large and significant programme of research conferences, workshops, seminars and inter-disciplinary events, including annual Research Symposia that focus attention on particular areas of mathematics that the department determines each year.

Good transport links and purpose-built accommodation on campus for mathematicians, which is managed within the department by the MRC, support a strong programme of research visitors that helps to keep the department at the cutting edge of research. For further details of the Department please visit the departmental website.

The University of Warwick is a top-100 global research university in which departments thrive and which supports their initiatives. Warwick’s success has been built on exceptional academic standards, combining creativity and intellectual rigour with agility, professionalism and sustainability. It aims to provide its students with a life-changing education, an outstanding student experience and a global perspective as citizens of the future.

The next Head will work with this large and diverse community of academics and students, and support collaboration with the wider University. He or she will represent the Department to public and private audiences, nationally and internationally, and develop networks to promote the work of the Department.
