Research Fellow - Programmer / Software Engineer (Particle Physics Group)

University of Birmingham - School of Physics & Astronomy

Duration: Fixed-term until 30 September 2019

The Birmingham Particle Physics group has a vacancy for a Programmer / Software Engineer, initially for 2 years, with the possibility of extension, depending on continued external funding. This is a `core’ post funded through the group’s Consolidated Grant from the STFC for our research at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

The successful applicant will provide expert support for and further development of various aspects of the ATLAS first level trigger (`L1Calo’) off-line calibration and simulation software. (S)he will also provide expert support within the LHCb experiment for distributed data management and the GEANT4 simulation package, including its release and regression testing. The role may also involve additional future responsibilities in line with the group’s experimental focus.

The successful applicant will hold a first degree (and ideally a higher degree) in Particle Physics or a related subject. (S)he will have a thorough understanding and experience of programming using C++, Python and Linux. Experience of the software environments, techniques and methods in use by ATLAS and/or LHCb will be an advantage, as will experience with Geant4 and with web design.

The Particle Physics group currently has 12 academic staff, 15 post-doctoral researchers, 3 support staff and 21 research students.  Our activities include ATLAS and LHCb at the LHC, NA62 on the CERN SPS and the DUNE future long-baseline neutrino experiment. We have a newly opened 200m2 set of clean room facilities for silicon detector R&D and construction, and maintain a significant Tier 2 site on the UK GridPP contribution to LHC world-wide distributed computing.

Potential applicants are encouraged to obtain further information about the post from: Prof Paul Newman;
