Role overview
The role of the Educational Developer is to contribute to the enhancement of the quality of learning and teaching across the University, through the development and implementation of innovative pedagogic solutions. The Academic Enhancement Centre (AEC) employs a team of Educational Developers and a key responsibility of this particular role will be to lead on the PGCert. 

The Educational Developer reports to the Director, Academic Enhancement Centre. 

The Academic Enhancement Centre (AEC) is committed to exploring new models of higher education, supporting and enhancing best academic practice in all learning, teaching and research activities, both on and off campus by using educational technologies, and it supports XJTLU in reaching its global goals to combine eastern and western education philosophies. Its core aim is to provide support to academic departments by developing strategies to enhance programme design and assessments, driving innovation in the curriculum, providing instruction and coaching on good teaching practice and by leading on the deployment of technology in the virtual and campus-based classroom. The Centre works with academic departments to tailor such support to their specific needs, as well as providing generic training programmes as its core business. 

The AEC forms part of the Centre for Academic Affairs which provides professional services support to departments and schools and includes the Professional Services Team of departmental secretaries and cluster administrators and the central teams of the Registry, Research Administration, the Graduate School Office, the Programme Management and Quality Team and the Academic Enhancement Centre. 


  • Support the implementation, across the institution, of the University’s vision for Learning and Teaching.
  • Provide directorship for the coherent delivery of modules on the CPS programme for the coming academic year 2017-18.
  • Provide directorship for the coherent delivery of modules on the PGCert programme from the start of the academic year 2018-19 onwards.
  • Support the AEC Director in the development of an institutional academic development framework and ready relevant documentation for approval by the respective committees at XJTLU and the University of Liverpool, as well as accreditation by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
  • Provide expert and specialist advice and guidance to academic staff in developing excellence in teaching with a primary view of enhancing the student learning experience at XJTLU.
  • Develop collaborative networks to identify and disseminate good practices in teaching and learning and evaluates their effectiveness.
  • Recommend, lead and facilitate the effective sharing of good practices in assessments and other student evaluation.
  • Act as a consultant/coach to academic staff seeking to enhance the quality of their teaching.
  • Maintain and develop resources, including websites and other tools that facilitate national and international good practice in learning and teaching.
  • Work closely with staff in other professional services to promote the use of appropriate technologies, facilities and methods in learning and teaching.
  • Work collaboratively within the Centre for Academic Affairs (CAA), and in particular the AEC, to contribute to achieving the strategic ambitions of the University in relation to academic enhancement and excellence in learning, teaching and research, and to contribute to achieving the AEC’s ongoing operational objectives.
  • Keep up-to-date with changes and developments in related policies and procedures.
  • Reflect on your own professional practice and keep abreast of current developments in learning and teaching through engagement with the wider community via subject associations, attendance and presentations at conferences, colloquiums and personal development days.
  • Willing to engage in personal development and training and change the focus of the role, where appropriate, to meet the changing needs of the University.
  • Engage with relevant committees, working groups and forums to raise awareness of pedagogic principles, share examples of best practice and highlight developments in the field.
  • Carry out any other duties as required, commensurate with the role position. 

This is a full-time role with an initial fixed term contract for three years. The anticipated start time will be early to mid-September 2017. Working hours will generally be Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm with an hour for lunch. However, aspects of the role may sometimes require the post holder to work unsociable hours.
