Research Associate/Fellow Novel Fibreoptics (fixed-term)

A highly-specialised postdoctoral Associate/Fellow required to take up a 3-month post, developing unusual fibreoptics for optical devices. This position is to help develop new fibre-optical devices in healthcare. The Project is in conjunction with Industry and Academia. The position will be situated in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing, in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham, UK. There are world-class, dedicated facilities for fibre-drawing, which is located in a class 10,000 clean-room, and for fibre characterisation. The University of Nottingham was ranked 8th in the UK in the last UK Government Research Excellence Framework exercise and is a top one hundred worldwide University.

The post requires excellent and specific practical laboratory experience in fibre-drawing unusual glasses to extremely high specification, optical-quality fibre and in-depth experience in measuring the optical performance of glass optical fibres, as well as thermal characterisation. The post in addition requires knowledge and experience of using high power lasers across the spectrum.

Candidates will hold a PhD degree or equivalent (or close to completion) in glass fibreoptics or photonics, and a Bachelor or Master’s degree in materials, chemistry, physics, chemical or electrical/electronic engineering.

The Appointee will be highly motivated, reliable, and able to work both independently and as a team-player, and able to communicate effectively with our Academic and Industrial Partners both verbally and in the writing of regular laboratory reports. They must be able to communicate effectively, verbally with the team at Nottingham and in the writing of regular, high-quality reports, on time, for the Sponsor. It is expected that the Researcher will contribute to the production of high calibre publications in high-profile journals and conferences. The Appointee must also be able to interact effectively with the Project Industrial and University Partners and to take the initiative at key times in order to move the Project forwards. 

This is a full-time, fixed-term post for to be offered for a period of 3 months.
