The Department of Life Sciences was the top ranked university department in the UK for research intensity in Biological Sciences in REF2014 (Times Higher Education), scoring 100% on our environment.

An opportunity has arisen to work as a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Life Sciences. Reporting to the Director of Postgraduate Studies and the Director of Undergraduate Studies, you will translate your expertise and enthusiasm into motivational teaching for both postgraduate and undergraduate students.

You will teach core quantitative modules in programming, modelling, statistics (including R), data management and computing.  Your duties will involve delivering lectures; running tutorials and practical classes; coursework organisation; supervision and support of undergraduate and masters’ level projects; and personal tutoring.  You will also give demonstrations, assess work, and provide feedback as and when appropriate. Working at both the South Kensington and Silwood Park campuses, you will also contribute to the implementation of the College’s Learning and Teaching Strategy in the department.  

You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in the quantitative aspects of Life Sciences along with specialist knowledge in a relevant discipline in a specific area of Biology or Biochemistry and of teaching methods and techniques within your specialist area. You will also have knowledge and experience of computer programming, Statistics in R, data management, and visualisation.  You must be able to teach effectively at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and will have proven experience of promoting effective learning and interactions with students.  You will also be expected to demonstrate the ability to motivate students in the study of quantitative aspects of Life Sciences.

This is a teaching position with no research component other than education related scholarship. Depending on your background, you will also be required for core postgraduate and undergraduate teaching in Life Sciences.

This post is fixed term for 24 months and will be based at both Life Science campuses (South Kensington and Silwood Park), strengthening our world-class education.
