Senior Lecturer / Reader in Art History

University of Sussex - School of History, Art History and Philosophy, Philosophy

The Department of Art History at Sussex enjoys an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching. Consistently ranked among the top departments by university guides, and now in its 50th year, it is one of the most distinguished and innovative research-led art history departments in the UK.

An opportunity now exists for a specialist in curating/museum studies and heritage, western or non-western. We welcome applications from any relevant discipline, including architectural history, design history, anthropology, archaeology, historical geography, oral history, as well as art history.

You will develop our current, very successful MA in Art History and Museum Curating, and to take a lead role in preparing the delivery of a new MA in Heritage Studies. You will have significant experience of working in the museum and/or heritage sectors, and will be expected to be pro-active in developing and consolidating our extensive network of external partnerships with museums and galleries, locally and nationally, as well as the wider regional heritage network, including the University’s recently opened Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts. Knowledge of digital heritage is desirable. You will have a research specialization in any aspect of curating/museum studies and heritage. You will also be expected to demonstrate a track record of grant capture, with concrete plans for generating research income, as well as experience of doctoral supervision, and the potential to attract PhD students.

The successful candidate will join a thriving, collegial department with a commitment to interdisciplinary study and an intellectually ambitious student community. Research-led teaching, good communication skills, and an ability to work productively as part of a friendly, team-oriented department are essential for this position.
