Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Chemical Engineering

The Susteen Technologies UK ltd is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral research fellow as part of a newly awarded 1.2 M cross discipline EPSRC project. The project aim is to investigate systematically a whole catalytic technology pathways for the production and use of Furanics in particular Methyl Furans (MF) and biofuels containing Methyl Furans as novel engine fuels via biomass conversion. The research will involve working with a new Thermo-Catalytic Reforming (TCR©) technology at pilot scale for the conversion of biomass into biofuels. Furthermore, the process will be quantified in terms of mass and energy balances and the energy vectors produced will be fully characterised in terms of their fuel physical and chemical properties.

The candidate must have significant experience working in the area of biomass thermal conversion via catalytic bio-oil upgrading of real and model bio-oil compounds and also extensive experience in heterogeneous catalysts synthesis and characterisation focused on metal oxides (Ga, Zr) and zeolite materials. The candidate must have strong analytical skills experience in bulk and surface characterisation via a diverse range of modern analytical instrumentation such as porosimetry, Raman, XRD, XPS, DRIFT, TEM, TPD, TGA, ICP-OES and CHNS. Furthermore, the candidate should have key chemical engineering skills in process design, P&IDs, pilot plant safety training, HAZOPS, and risk assessments. Experience with Py-GC-MS is extremely desirable.

The candidate must be able to work independently and should have excellent networking, communication and written skills and competent with giving professional scientific presentations to large audiences. The candidate should also be experienced in writing research grants to European and National funding agencies such as EPSRC/H2020 or similar. A good publication record is essential.    

The candidate must hold a minimum second class bachelor/master’s degree in chemical engineering and must have completed or be nearing completion a PhD in a closely related field of research. The successful candidate will receive a travel allowance for conference attendance and training. The candidate must also be willing to travel to Germany occasionally to receive training on specialist equipment.
