Postdoctoral Position in Optimisation and Scale up of Colloidal Semiconducting Nanocrystals

University of Cambridge - Department of Physics

Limit of Tenure: 21 months

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Position in the Optimisation and Scale up of Colloidal Semiconducting Nanocrystals at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge. This is an industrially focussed position which will require close collaboration with our industrial partner, Eight19 Ltd (

The successful candidate will join the world-leading Optoelectronics Group, one of the world’s leading academic groups in the field of organic, nanocrystal and hybrid electronics. Its research programme is built on a broad scientific approach aiming to understand the electronic properties of solution processable semiconductors in general, but also aiming to understand in-depth the physical processes that govern the performance of organic, nanocrystal and hybrid organic-nanocrystal electronic devices, such as light emitting diodes, photovoltaics, and field effect transistors. Further information can be found on the group’s website

We are looking for a highly motivated, bright and enthusiastic candidate with a strong background in the synthesis and characterisation of colloidal semiconducting nanocrystals. The project involves the optimisation and scale up of PbS nanocrystals. We have recently achieved high photoluminescence quantum efficiency in the NIR (PLQE > 95%) using core-shell structures. The successful candidate will be responsible for optimising and scaling up the synthesis of these nanocrystals, for an application in a newly developed optically active thin film coating for solar cells. They will work in a highly collaborative team developing the thin film coatings, including team members from Eight19. Upon the successful completion of the project and subject to confirmation at the time, there may be an opportunity to apply for a full-time position in a similar role within Eight19.

The ideal candidate should have a PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or a related area. Direct experience in the synthesis of nanocrystals, core-shell nanocrystals, high PLQE nanocrystals, control of nanocrystal ligand chemistry, film fabrication via solution processing spin-coating, bar-coating, experience with characterisation of nanocrystals via electron microscopy and photoluminescence measurements, as well as a strong track record of high-quality research is required. Experience with nanocrystal synthesis via flow-reactors would be a plus. Experience with organic semiconductors, nanocrystal-organic hybrids, as well as electro-optical measurements of thin films would also be a plus.
