Assistant Professor in Legal Theory (Grade 8)

Durham University - Durham Law School

Durham Law School is consistently ranked to be among the top five in the country, with The Times listing us 4th and the Daily Telegraph placing us 3rd in their league tables. Moreover, as a top 40 QS World Ranked law school, our academics are at the heart of world-class research, engaging with important issues on a national and international level. We are expanding at the quickest pace in our distinguished 50 year history, making this an exceptional time to join us. In this multi-layered position, you will join the Human Rights Centre to combine research with teaching, supporting our undergraduate and postgraduate students as they engage in an internationally excellent education. Enjoying extensive opportunities for research including research leave and a generous research allowance, you will be supported to produce outputs that raise your profile and that of the school, both nationally and internationally.

You’ll need:

  • Research interests in Legal Theory, with evidence of former outputs that are deemed to be ‘world class’. If you also have interests in gender and/or identity that would be desirable, but isn’t essential.
  • A clear research plan in Legal Theory that includes the ability to secure funding.
  • Evidence of leading research groups, plus mentoring research colleagues and supervising PhD students.
  • A good first degree plus a PhD in Law or a related topic.
  • The ability to teach students in a creative and stimulating manner, using various techniques including technology. You will also have accredited qualifications in higher education teaching (or be in the process of achieving these).
