Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering (Grade 7 or 8)

Durham University

The role:

As one of the most prestigious Engineering departments in the country, our outputs are consistently rated to be 3* and 4* star, while our students are among the most gifted. With standards such as this, you can therefore expect to join a dynamic team, who are all committed to contributing to the future of engineering, with particular reference to our projects including ‘Sustainable Infrastructure Challenges’ and ‘Future Energy Systems’. Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and supervising PhD studies, you will also be encouraged to pursue your own academic interests, particularly those in aerodynamics with a specific focus on external flows relating to energy conversion systems (such as wind turbines or low carbon vehicles). Developing inter-departmental research opportunities, you will also join the Durham Energy Institute if your research is compatible.

If you are applying for the role as a grade 8 position, you’ll need:

  • A good first degree and a PhD in Engineering Fluid Mechanics or Thermodynamics or a related field.
  • To be a Chartered Engineer, or be in the process of achieving this status.
  • A reputation for producing internationally recognised research outputs with a clear research plan and the confidence to apply for research funding. It would be beneficial if your research is sympathetic to one of our key areas which can be found here.
  • HEA teaching qualifications (or the ability to achieve this), with enthusiasm for teaching both seminars and lectures.
  • The ability to recruit and supervise PhD students.
  • To be motivated to apply the outputs of your research to engineering applications, with current industrial links.
  • Good leadership capabilities supported by excellent communication skills.

Candidates who would like to apply for the position as a grade 7 post must have concluded or be in the process of concluding their PhD studies. While you won’t necessarily have the above experience, you are encouraged to apply for this role if you feel you have the potential to achieve these standards.
