As part of our ambitious plans to expand our research provision and expand our highly regarded undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, you will join Durham’s Global Security Institute where you will contribute your extensive research skills to further our understanding of conflict, establishing effective responses to exceptionally complex problems. Your research will be supported by a research allowance and the regular opportunity of research leave. Providing education on modules within our flagship MSc programmes ‘Defence, Development and Diplomacy’ and ‘Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding’, you will work across a variety of tutorials, seminars and lectures, and you will also supervise dissertations and guide research groups.

You’ll need:

  • A PhD in peace and conflict studies or a subject such as political science, political economy or international relations, with a clear focus on peace-building, post-conflict reconstruction or similar.
  • Field-based research expertise in Peace and Conflict, with good skills in appropriate research methodologies that can be applied to complex data.
  • The publication of internationally excellent and world-leading outputs that have made a major contribution to current thinking.
  • Fantastic communication skills, which have supported your ongoing engagement with practitioners and professionals resulting in research-based impact on practice.
  • A comprehensive 3 to 5 year research plan, with the ability to generate income to fund these studies.
  • The ability to supervise PhD students, lead research groups and support students’ studies with high quality teaching.
