Research Associate

Imperial College London - Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Fixed Term appointment for up to 12 months

Mixing induced by localised buoyancy sources, and the plumes that form, are relevant to many environmental and industrial processes. In the built environment, the mixing by these buoyant plumes is affected by the level of confinement imposed upon the flow. This project will quantify the effects confinement on the mixing by plumes.

Applications are invited for a 1-year full-time researcher within in the Fluid Mechanics Section of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College London. The successful applicant will conduct a study of the mixing by turbulent buoyant plumes in the presence of confinement and develop models to describe and predict these effects for various applications, including the natural ventilation of buildings. The research is funded by the EPSRC and will be conducted under the supervision of Dr Henry Burridge.

The researcher will experimentally investigate the mixing induced by plumes, quantifying the effects on the mixing when the degree of confinement is systematically varied. The experimental data will be used to inform models that account for these affects in a manner which is of practical use to a wide range of applications, including the ventilation of buildings.

Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree/MSc in a relevant area of engineering or physical sciences (or equivalent) and have (or be close to completing) a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant area of fluid mechanics.

Candidates should have experience in modelling turbulent flows, ideally in the presence of buoyancy effects, and should have had significant exposure to, or experience in, relevant experimental methods. Applicants should be industrious, dedicated, highly-motivated, ambitious, confident and co-operative individuals. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are also essential.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
