Teaching Fellow

Royal Holloway, University of London - Centre for the Development of Academic Skills

The Centre for the Development of Academic Skills (CeDAS) at Royal Holloway is seeking to appoint a full-time Teaching Fellow from 1 January 2018 to complement and extend the teaching and learning development expertise already present within the department. A job share will not be considered as the role entails significant leadership responsibilities on one of the centre’s taught programmes, e. g. the Pre-Sessional English Language Programme. Although leadership responsibilities will principally be in relation to one area of activity, teaching in the department will span all core student-facing activities.

Established in 2014, CeDAS offers developmental support to students from a breadth of cultural, linguistic and academic backgrounds, both at undergraduate and postgraduate taught level. However, given the significant numbers of international students at Royal Holloway, CeDAS delivers a range of EAP activities especially designed to meet the needs of non-native speakers unfamiliar with the demands of UK university education.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all student-facing activities offered by CeDAS but will primarily be involved in delivering EAP support to L2 students, including the Pre-Sessional English Language Programme during the summer months and the Academic Skills Programme during term time.

To this end, candidates should have a solid background in EAP pedagogy within a UK university setting with significant experience of devising and delivering either Pre-Sessional or in-sessional teaching to international students. A relevant Masters’ level qualification in EAP (or another relevant field) is essential as is a recognised teaching qualification at PGCE level or equivalent, e.g. HEA fellowship.

Furthermore, the successful candidate will need to have a good track record of programme leadership and demonstrate an ability to work closely with departmental staff as well as academics in developing learning of high quality.

Informal enquiries may be made to Norlene Conway, Senior Teaching Fellow (n.conway@royalholloway.ac.uk).
