Assistant Professor in Classics (Open Specialism)

Durham University

About us:
The Department of Classics and Ancient History is one of the very best in the UK, and worldwide. We were ranked joint second in the last national research evaluation (REF2014) in terms of the quality of our research, and joint first in the quality of our research environment. We attract large numbers of exceptionally talented undergraduate, MA and doctoral students, and we focus on high-quality research-led teaching. The Department delivers very high levels of overall student satisfaction (96% in the last National Student Survey).

The role:
Candidates are expected to make a strong case for complementing existing areas and/or developing new areas of research excellence in the Department.  We are currently expanding, with three new permanent positions in Classics, including this post. We welcome applications from scholars with research and teaching excellence in any area of Classics (broadly conceived).

Applicants must be clear whether they are applying for the post at the level of Associate Professor or Professor and meet the relevant criteria for that level of post.

You’ll need:

  • A good first degree and a PhD in Classics or a related subject (either completed, or under examination).
  • The ability to produce world-class research, including a research plan which supports the activities of the department.
  • Proof that you have contributed to research groups, mentoring early career researchers.
  • The confidence to supervise PhD students.
  • To be willing to develop successful research project proposals, with the potential to secure funding or generate income.
  • Experience of delivering high-quality teaching across lectures and in smaller study groups, with the ability to attain fellowship of the HEA.
  • Confident leadership and communication skills, with the willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team.

If you haven’t specifically met the above criteria but have recently completed or are concluding your PhD and feel you have the skills needed to do so, then you are invited to apply for the role at grade 7.

Closing date: 20 October 2017 at midday.
