Purpose and Main Duties

An Associate Lecturer A is required to deliver lectures and seminars for the module ‘Methods, Analysis and Techniques’ which is a compulsory module for undergraduate (BA, BSc) students in the Department of Geography.

The role is to deliver weekly lectures and lead seminars for one group of up to 50 for this module in the Spring terms for 2 hours per week for 7.5 weeks and to mark student assessment.

Candidates should be enrolled for MPhil/PhD study in Geography or a related discipline at Birkbeck or hold a PhD in a relevant field.

The minimum requirements for selection are listed below:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent;
  • As a minimum at the corresponding level of award as required to teach (or equivalent professional/industry level experience).

Please note: candidates need to demonstrate competence or significant potential in all areas.

A suitable candidate should have research interests in war, conflict and development in addition to international development, and ideally some experience in teaching in Higher Education.

Salary: Grade 7 of the College’s London Pay Scale which is starting rate £57.55 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay) for contact hours worked.

The salary quoted above is based on an hourly rate dependent upon length of serve with the College. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation; teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course. The College’s London Pay Scale includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area. This appointment is subject to a probationary period of 18 months.
