Research Associate in Synaptic Plasticity and Synapse Degeneration

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate synaptic plasticity and synapse degeneration in the mammalian nervous system.  Our lab has made significant contributions in the understanding of the function of Wnt signalling in synapse formation, plasticity and synapse maintenance.  The successful applicant will determine how deficiency in Wnt signalling triggers synapse loss and synaptic dysfunction in the adult brain. The project will be under the direction of Professors Patricia Salinas and Alasdair Gibb, both at UCL. The work will involve analyses of synaptic changes in vivo, in brain slices and cultured neurons using state-of-the-art imaging techniques combined with the latest molecular genetic methods and electrophysiology to determine changes in network connectivity. The post is funded by the MRC is available for one year in the first instance with the possibility of further funding.

The candidate should hold a PhD degree in a relevant subject area (or close to being awarded a PhD) with strong interest in understanding the mechanisms that modulate synaptic plasticity and synapse degeneration. Experience in cellular neuroscience, cell imaging techniques and/or electrophysiology are also essential.
