Full time starting salary is normally in the range £39,324 to £46,924. With potential progression once in post to £52,793 a year.

The University of Birmingham, School of Biosciences, in the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, seeks to appoint a fixed term teaching-focussed lecturer in the area of Biochemistry, Cell Biology or Plant Biology.

The post provides an exciting opportunity for an individual to contribute to delivery of Biochemistry, Cell Biology or Plant Biology teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The School of Biosciences offers a stimulating teaching and research environment with diverse research activity, including molecular cell biology, molecular microbiology, structural biology, molecular biophysics, plant sciences, environmental and animal biology. Our students particularly value the enthusiasm of our staff and the inspiration that comes with a research-led curriculum. The appointment will have a strategic role in meeting and supporting the aspirations of students in a very competitive higher education arena.

As a teaching focussed lecturer the post holder will join the teaching team in the school, making a significant contribution to developments designed to improve the quality of education and student engagement. Teaching focussed role-holders will be expected to advance the practice of teaching in their modules within the school, take a role in leading curriculum development, and play an important role in student academic support. They will also deliver excellent teaching that inspires students, and is informed by discipline-based research.

Management and administration will involve contributions at School level including Module Leadership.  It will also include a substantial contribution to administration of teaching such as to the administration and management of undergraduate or postgraduate taught programmes, admissions to postgraduate taught programmes.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to recruitment of students including contributing to open day and AVD activities, and outreach work or similar activities at School level or further within the University.

Person Specification

  • Normally, a higher Degree relevant to Biochemistry, Cell Biology or Plant Biology (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
  • Hold or be prepared to work towards a Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy
  • Research/teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism.
  • Proven ability to devise, and deliver learning.
