Molecular Research Scientist

Animal and Plant Health Agency

At the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) we safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy. As a Molecular Research Scientist you will support important research and development into the molecular characterisation of bacterial pathogens using whole genome sequencing (WGS).

Developing molecular serotyping and characterisation of Salmonella is a priority for us. As reagents are withdrawn, it is vital to develop and validate alternative approaches. Your bioinformatics skills will equip you to make a real difference. Through a stimulating mix of lab-based research in bacteriological characterisation, data handling and analysis, you will enjoy excellent opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge.

Supporting Salmonella WGS based diagnostics and molecular studies, and assisting senior scientists with analysis and report writing, you will make a core contribution to the development of a genomic analytical framework for bacterial molecular characterisation. This will be key to facilitating WGS based epidemiological investigations and outbreak detection.

To be equal to the challenge, you will need either a relevant degree in Biological Sciences with a strong IT element, or an MSc in Bioinformatics, or a BSc in a science related subject and appropriate practical experience. Skills in genomic analysis, with an emphasis on bioinformatics usage, would be a real advantage. You will definitely bring to the role a strong, relevant scientific background with demonstrable experience in molecular data generation and analysis.

Excellent organisational skills and a good working knowledge of the Linux command line are vital. From writing reports to collaborating and partnering, your communication skills really set you apart.

In return you will benefit from our commitment to support your development. As your skills grow in this role, you will ultimately work independently to conduct bioinformatics analyses and improve the group’s overall analytical capability. You will also enjoy excellent benefits including pension.
