Postdoctoral Research Associate in Operational Aftershock Forecasting

University of Edinburgh - Geosciences

We are looking for an experienced postdoctoral research associate to participate in Newton fund project (Rapid Aftershock Forecasting for Turkey, RAFT) to develop a rapid response, aftershock recording and operational forecasting system for Turkey.

The project will progress research undertaken in the recent NERC PURE AFTER project which developed operational forecasting algorithms as well as communication protocols to assist in emergency response to earthquakes. RAFT is a collaboration between the University of Edinburgh and the Kandilli Observatory and AFAD in Turkey and will develop a system to rapidly deploy a network of broadband seismometers, and produce and analyse near real time earthquake catalogues for operational aftershock forecasting.

The project will work with NGOs to develop appropriate training and education so that near-real time forecasts can be used in emergency response.

This post is part-time (3 days per week), fixed term from 1st October 2017; or as soon as possible thereafter until 30 June 2018.
