The University of Birmingham Finance Office is involved in a significant amount of change as we move to match our financial operations with the University’s strategic vision. A core part of this change programme is being delivered by the Financial Services team; which under the leadership of the Deputy Director of Finance also has business as usual to deliver on a day to day basis.

There is an opportunity to join the Financial Services leadership team and to drive and support the activities of a wide range of financial transaction services; reporting; compliance; technical accounting; and team management activities as the Head of Corporate Accounting.

We are looking for someone to lead a team of 12 people to deliver financial information at University and consolidated group levels to both internal and external stakeholders who can operate comfortably at a strategic and detailed technical levels. This role is key to delivering the financial sustainability of the University and will be looking for improvements to be made to existing systems and processes as well as supporting a new integrated Finance and HR system that starts to come online in 2018.

The core capabilities for the role are:

  • Being a qualified accountant with membership of a relevant body.
  • Having experience of working at management level in a financial environment for a large complex organisation
  • Holding a thorough understanding of UK GAAP
  • Having experience of developing financial systems and processes, preferably alongside a change of IT systems
  • In possession of excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with an ability to explain different concepts to non-specialists
  • Recognised as a strong leader of people with ability to challenge and develop team members
  • With an ability to work in the detail as well as to think and act strategically
  • Being driven by a changing environment and able to work collaboratively to deliver change
  • Having a demonstrable ability to translate external and/or technical requirements into practical solutions; and
  • Being a strong builder of relationship and networks
