Research Associate in Robotics/Artificial Limbs

Imperial College London - Department of Mechanical Engineering

Salary Range:

Research Associate: £36,800 – £44,220 per annum* (maximum salary on appointment is £36,800 per annum)

Fixed Term appointment for up to 9 months in the first instance

The Biomechatronics Laboratory at Imperial College London is recruiting for Postdoctoral Researcher post in robotics (artificial limbs) and signal processing to begin in Oct 2017. This project is an exciting opportunity for a motivated researcher wishing to work at the interface of translational academic-industrial research in medical/assistive robotics and machine interface. Longer term opportunities are anticipated through planned commercialization activity and ongoing research at the close of the project. The length of appointment can be adjusted based on the status of the candidates.

Lower extremity prosthetics are reported to be the “Single Largest Category of Revenue/Profit” in orthotics and prosthetics, with a reported market size of $1.7 billion in 2016. Recent advances in robotic limb design have significantly transformed lower limb prosthetics. However, ensuring reliable and effective interaction with the user remains a significant issue impacting poor user acceptance. The primary objective of this project is to integrate a new patent (pending) sensor suite with a commercial power knee to clinically demonstrate control of active lower limb prostheses. The system will be validated in a pilot clinical study involving above-knee amputees in collaboration with our industrial partners Ossur and HCI Viocare, laying the foundation for a full clinical trial.

A researcher with a strong background in physiological signal processing, inertial measurement, and robotic hardware implementation is critical to the post. A candidate is sought to lead the implementation of the sensor system on a commercial prosthetic (robotic) knee that will be used in patient testing. The candidate is expected to support proposals for extended work in this area as well as support commercial translation of the system. The applicants should have a Masters or PhD, or be near to completion (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Mechatronics or Robotics or a closely related discipline.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
