Professor/Chair or Associate Professor in Classics (Open Specialism)

About us:
The Department of Classics and Ancient History is one of the very best in the UK, and worldwide.  We were ranked joint second in the last national research evaluation (REF2014) in terms of the quality of our research, and joint first in the quality of our research environment.  We attract large numbers of exceptionally talented undergraduate, MA and doctoral students, and we focus on high-quality research-led teaching.  The Department delivers very high levels of overall student satisfaction (96% in the last National Student Survey).

The role:
Candidates are expected to make a strong case for complementing existing areas and/or developing new areas of research excellence in the Department.  We are currently expanding, with three new permanent positions in Classics, including this post.  We welcome applications from scholars with research and teaching excellence in any area of Classics (broadly conceived).

Applicants must be clear whether they are applying for the post at the level of Associate Professor or Professor and meet the relevant criteria for that level of post.

You’ll need:

  • A good first degree with a PhD in Classics or any related subject.
  • To be able to demonstrate a major contribution to your research field, with outputs consistently recognised as internationally excellent, with some at world-class level or with world-class potential.
  • Evidence of producing world-class research projects and contributing to research groups, plus have a clear research plan for future endeavours.
  • Excellent teaching skills (in both small and large groups), with the ability to teach students at all levels, supervising PhD students, and mentoring postdoctoral candidates.
  • Experience of leadership of research project and/or fellowship proposals.
  • Fantastic interpersonal skills.
  • Ideally, you will have the ability to teach Latin and Greek at all levels.

If you are applying for the role of Professor (Grade 10), you will also need:

  • Experience of leading research groups and developing research fields on an international level.
  • The confidence to recruit PhD students and devise relevant programmes.
  • Leadership skills, particularly in guiding internationally excellent teaching environments and the content of curriculum, ensuring students achieve their potential.
