Applications are invited for a fully funded 2 year postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) to be conducted in the School’s of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering & Analytical Science in the University of Manchester. In addition, the successful will spend time undertaking experiments at the UK’s neutron facility (ISIS) based in Oxfordshire. This post is part of a large collaborative project involving the University of Cambridge, University of Manchester, ISIS and Unilever and aims to develop an understanding of non-Newtonian fluids used in formulated home and personal care products. By combining theoretical and experimental methods, the project will obtain an understanding of the relationship between the process history of the materials and their structure-property relationships.

The PDRA position available at Manchester/ISIS will be to develop in situ neutron and X-ray scattering methods to probe the structure with atomic and molecular resolution as a function of composition, stress and temperature. In addition, the researcher will work closely with researchers in modelling and process analytics to achieve the overall project objectives.

  • Applicants should have experience in neutron/X-ray scattering of liquids and relevant modelling of the neutron/X-ray data. It is also desirable that candidates have expertise in one or more of the following: (i) complex /non-Newtonian liquids; (ii) NMR spectroscopy, (iii) multiscale modelling (iv) small angle X-ray or neutron scattering. Candidates who have experience of working in a multidisciplinary project and working with industry will be particularly welcome.
  • Candidates should already hold or be nearing completion of a Ph.D./D.Phil. or equivalent in an area relevant to the position requirements.
