Applications are invited for a Lectureship/Senior Lectureship in Applied Mathematics within the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics from January 2018, or such other date as may be agreed. The successful applicant is expected to establish a collaborative, externally funded and nationally recognized research program as well as contribute to teaching, advising, and mentoring that support diversity and inclusion.

You will have established links with non-academic partners, such as industry, business or government and will be expected to take on the role of Director of Business and Engagement on the School Executive Board. You will be expected to carry out and publish high-quality research that compliments and can be integrated into existing research areas within the school.

Newcastle University has a strong tradition of research in a wide range of areas of theoretical physics, mathematical physics, and astrophysics, some in collaboration with experimentalists and observers, with key research activities centred around astrophysical fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, cosmology and quantum gravity, mathematical biology and biomedical modelling, industrial fluid dynamics, and quantum fluids.

The School is also developing a new physics programme with current strengths in theoretical astrophysics, theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics, and theoretical quantum science. Other sections in the School conduct research and teaching in pure mathematics and statistics.

We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender but, as women are currently under-represented within this field, we would encourage applications from female mathematicians. Appointment will be based on merit alone.

The University holds a silver Athena SWAN award in recognition of our good employment practices for the advancement of gender equality.  The University also holds the HR Excellence in Research award for our work to support the career development of our researchers, and is a member of the Euraxess initiative supporting researchers in Europe.
