Research Associate - Chemist/Chemical Biologist

University of Cambridge - Department of Chemistry

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

The Balasubramanian group seeks to recruit a postdoctoral chemist to work on an ambitious new project aimed at the production of molecularly annotated 3D atlases of tumours, funded by a Cancer Research UK Grand Challenge Award. The post holder will be based at the Department of Chemistry and work in close contact with colleagues in the Imaging and Molecular Annotation of Xenografts (IMAXT) team at the CRUK Cambridge Institute (see https://imaxt.cruk.cam.ac.uk).

The successful applicant will play a key role in developing new technologies and chemical tools to produce bioconjugates of antibodies and small molecules and/or oligonucleotides and use them as probes to measure the genetic and proteomic landscape of cancer in situ. The post holder will also contribute to the development of new strategies to specifically crosslink nucleic acids from biological samples to various polymer matrices and hydrogels to enable improved imaging.

The successful applicant will have a strong background in organic chemistry and chemical biology, with an interest in bioconjugation, nucleic acid and peptide chemistry. Some experience or interest in molecular and cellular biology would be desirable. We seek a highly-motivated individual with excellent communication skills and who is able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The candidate should possess strong laboratory skills, show exceptional initiative and demonstrate a capacity for innovation and independent thought.
