Job description
The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems ( has an internationally leading reputation in basic and applied research for the development of bioproducts such as advanced materials and chemicals both from natural resources and through engineering biology. The department capitalizes on its interdisciplinary access, which involves the disciplines of chemistry, bioscience, physics, materials science, and related areas and which address the design and development of high-performance chemicals, fibre materials, nanomaterials and hybrids as well as functional interfaces derived therefrom.

We are looking for a staff scientist to strengthen our bioscience research in the field of biomolecular functionality. The staff scientist is expected to contribute to research in bioscience and engineering related to biotechnical production, processing and purification techniques, and functional analysis of biomolecules. It is also expected that a successful candidate will be engaged in student supervision and education in engineering biology. 

The study of biomolecular functionality is related to the development of biological systems and products for use within engineering biology and industrial biotechnology. Biomolecular functionality encompasses the understanding and study of functional interactions between biochemical components, biomolecular structure and function, and engineering of biological systems both in vivo and in vitro. Research in biomolecular functionality relies on detailed characterization using for example fluorescent probes, mass-spectroscopy, and biophysical techniques to quantify molecular interactions. It also requires a strong understanding of recombinant DNA technology to engineer microbial hosts in order to make and manipulate biological products. 


  • PhD in bioscience
  • Preferably 3 years of postdoc and/or industrial experience in analysis of biomolecular functionality
  • Expertise in biological production and biophysical characterization of biomolecules
  • Experience in managing and supervising research
  • Prior success in obtaining academic funding
  • Excellent written, oral, and communication skills
  • Excellent publication record in peer-reviewed journals 

Staff Scientist position can be either fixed-term or permanent. Salary is determined according to the salary system of Aalto University. The position is situated on the main campus of Aalto University in Otaniemi, Espoo. The planned starting date is in January 2018, but can also be negotiated.
