Salary: £22,494 to £26,829 per annum, depending on skills and experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.

Applications are invited for the above post based in the Division of Medical Sciences and Graduate Entry Medicine at the Royal Derby Hospital Campus. The post will provide Clinical and Laboratory Support to a number of active research groups within the division, including Clinical Physiology, Reproductive Physiology, Surgery, Medicine for Older People and both Vascular and Renal Medicine.

The successful candidate will have proven expertise in either imaging techniques (e.g. DXA and Doppler Ultrasound) and clinical measurement (e.g. ECG) or modern laboratory techniques i.e. mass spectrometry/molecular biology – training will be provided in either of these areas as required. Primarily, the successful candidate will provide laboratory support through sample preparation and extraction for subsequent mass spectrometric and molecular analyses. In addition, they will be expected to undertake DXA scans, perform ultrasound measures of tissue blood flow and in support of the metabolic studies, help with equipment/ facility setting-up, including infusions and blood and tissue sampling. Other day to day duties will include maintenance of study paperwork, including ethics and consent, ensuring good clinical/laboratory practice in relation to patients/volunteers partaking in research studies and laboratory analyses. The role holder will also contribute to teaching and workshops in their area of expertise i.e. clinical imaging/ measurement or mass spectrometry/molecular biology.

Candidates must have a minimum HNC in a relevant biomedical subject, with substantial work experience in mass spectrometry/molecular biology or imaging techniques and ideally will have experience of running clinical or human volunteer based research studies and management of the allied paperwork. The candidate should also have experience of stock management in either a clinical or laboratory setting. Experience of previous teaching, training and supervisory skills is desirable as is the ability to troubleshoot, optimise and develop analytical methodologies.

This is a permanent full-time post. Hours of work are 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday with the necessity for some flexibility outside the hours of 9am-5pm as required by the role. Job share arrangements may be considered for this post.
